plainbeta’s New Design - Pier 3

As you can tell, plainbeta looks a little different!
While it doesn’t look like I previously talked about, its new, and custom. So I’m happy.

Why didn’t I use that grid that I was so excited about?
It wasn’t working for me. It’s a great idea, I’m just not ready for it. So that theme will come later.

At any rate.
This design.

The Theme - Pier 3

I have dubbed this theme Pier 3. The three columns and the way they’re formatted just reminded me of a pier jutting out into sea. When I get sick of it I’ll make it available for download as a Wordpress Theme.

Half the time I like it, half the time I don’t - so I’ll probably end up making another one by the end of summer, or the end of the year at the latest.
I already am tossing a few ideas around in my head…

What’s Special about Pier 3?

If you haven’t noticed, the search bar, RSS links, and category links are all contained in a lightweight javascript accordion - though I am considering switching.

Other than that, the color scheme, and the inclusion of PIXELATED, Pier 3 isn’t that different than what I had before.

It’s a nice change, and I hope it keeps me happy until I come up with something else.

It’s still new, so there may be a few bugs here and there - if you see any, let me know.
Further more, I’m still working on it… so it’s not quite done… I still need to format the comments a little more. I don’t like how they are now.

I also updated my “comprehensive” list of design showcases - it now includes 77 showcases!
I’ll be submitting plainbeta to them all today or tomorrow…

  • I really like the design. I can’t explain why though. :D

  • Looks good Brian. I’ll add it to NS in the next update. ;)

  • I like it a lot! The colors, although simple, really blend together quite well with just enough whitespace.

I do however miss your ‘top posts’ section with the cool images. I think you replaced it with the section on the bottom of the right sidebar but since its below your “pixelated” icon set, I mistook it for a downloads section rather than cool blog posts I’d like to read.

  • Brian, it looks nice, but it’s hard to tell where one post stops and the next one starts. There’s also no postmeta - date, etc.

  • Thank you!

Kevin: That is correct - the top posts images are on the bottom right. I suppose I should label them.

Rob: Thanks for your input. I’ll look into that. As for the date, I have opted to abstain from including the date and time. After all, in the web world the date and time doesn’t really mater. What other postmeta is there? Author? I am the only author here… there’s nothing else necessary to be added.

  • Thanks for your reply, Brian. I understand your perspective, but I actually look often at dates on blogs - to see how new the most recent post is and to see how frequently the blogger posts. Even on a commercial site, dates are helpful for determining if offers made are still valid. The postmeta (even if nothing but the date) also signals for me the end of one post and the beginning of another. Just a thought…. :-)

  • I just noticed that the comments all have dates by them. ;-)

  • I’ll think about it.
I don’t think I’ll end up placing them on the main page, but I may put them on the individual post’s page.

  • looks really interesting and unusual, and i really like the left menu, don’t change it ;)

  • p.s did you design rss icons they are so cool :D

  • Yeah, I like the side-nav as well.
    And unfortunately… no… I didn’t design them.

  • I do like how its a different design and how you’ve changed from the typical blog design. Good job
